If you use an emergency turnaround on the interstate I hate you

Most places where there are interstates, there are emergency turnarounds. Just because they are there doesn't mean you should use them.

I just about rear ended a fucking Nissan Versa the other day who decided that he should go through the turn around, cut across two lanes of traffic to get off at the previous exit.

I had a friend who said he used emergency turnarounds all the time. I told him he should stop because they are incredibly dangerous to use.

Ugh. Just to drive the point home, here is the aftermath a fatal emergency turnaround accident in Ottawa's West End.

I remember it like yesterday; Summer of '78, and I'm cruising down the interstate in my recently acquired 1969 Chevelle (350, 4bbl, 3-speed Muncie, 21-inch racing clutch). I was in the left lane, no one around, and up ahead I see a big sedan coming through an emergency turn-around and onto the shoulder directly on my left.

He's picking up speed just as I'm coming abreast of him, and, having just freshly turned 20 and feeling the glory of conducting a not-godly-but-still-quite-capable muscle car about the planet, I gave not an inch, but instead powered along to keep him in his ill-earned place...

After a few seconds of this carbon-croaking pissing contest he relented and fell in behind me. Very close behind me. And flipped on the "cherries" on his dashboard. Awhoops.

Did I mention I'd just been to the mall to buy me some bro-tastic driving gloves? Oh did those fly off... I'm pretty sure that was my very first ticket.

But yeah, great advice there. Just beware of trying to dish out vigilante driving directions.

Luckily emergency turnarounds aren't used much here. In highways they are usually gated so it isn't even possible.

We still have had some accidents with them. This took one life two years ago:

I think the motorcycle was a Gold Wing.

Couple months after that accident one semi truck driver tried the same in the same area but luckily didn't cause any fatalities (one crumbled Opel though).

On the main interestates in the city we don't have them much, but we do have those emergency access points for the HOV lanes, and I shit you not, every single time I see someone using them, I see a cop pull them over. It's always awesome to see people actually get caught doing dumb shit that can put people in danger.

Its illegal as heck here, and I haven't seen one used by a non-emergency vehicle in a very very long time.

Same thing happened to me back in December. Cruising down the road at 70 in the right hand lane. All of a sudden a cop swerves through the turn around and across the left lane into most of the right lane. I slammed on the brakes and came up alongside him blasting the horn. No lights were on, but he floored it and took off. I did the same and topped out around 100 in a Duramax 2500. About 1.5 miles up he finally turned his lights on and pulled over a car that was easily 2 - 3 miles past the turn around.

Yes. Also, reversing on the shoulder and stopping at the end of on-ramps.

Hang up your keys and take the bus before you kill someone.

Had some dipshit in a green Yukon decide he forgot something at home, at the head of a line of traffic, doing 80mph in the left lane on I-80 through Iowa. I was maybe four cars back from him, and all of a sudden, the whole line of traffic does a massive panic brake. Dipshit doesn't even dive for the shoulder, he just slows to about 15 mph and turns directly from the lane of traffic. But that doesn't mean he stopped. No sir, he just slowly rolled onto the other side and gradually pulled away. As I floored it back up to speed, I heard a white 3-series coming the other way holding down the horn, because dipshit hadn't gotten up past 35, and hadn't moved out of the left lane, were the Bimmer was.

There was heavy truck traffic that day, and had a big-rig been in the left lane going either way during that whole equation, we would've been dealing with a massive, nasty accident, all because of that moron. So yeah, I agree, tell your friend that's one of the stupidest things you can do on the interstate.

I must admit that I have used one once, although there was almost no traffic at the time.

dummy is dumb. Seriously, I know it sucks to miss your exit especially when the next exit isn't for 12 miles, but deal with it.

Years ago, there was the freaking 18 wheeler I saw sitting in the NYS Thruway median, from one side to the other side, waiting for a big enough break to continue their illegal turnaround.

More recently, there was the time I exited one backed-up freeway for a another, then soon spotted a car in the turnaround. My wife grumbled to me about the cop not doing anything to smooth traffic flow on the other highway... until we got close enough to identify a three-series BMW *HIGH-CENTERED* on the median. That was poetic justice. No idea how long it had been there, but beautiful nonetheless.

The 18 wheeler driver was a goddamn moron.

BMW asshat parking strikes again!!!! Getting a car high centered on a median takes a special kind of stupid.

July is probably nicest time to do that. Winter in Lapland is pretty but there isn't much daylight and you have only really short time to see anything.

When I switched my jobs 3 years ago I traveled from north Lapland to our capital during one night in April. It took me 14 hours and odometer got 1050 km. It would be a lot more fun to the similar trip another time of year and during several days as then you could visit more places than 3 gas stations...

Yeah I hear that. I drove from where I live in Canada to my girlfriends parents...it was 1050 kms +/- also. When I drove from my home to Ottawa, now THAT was a drive. 4000+ kms. Took almost a week!
